Timeline

The teacher will begin the lesson by introducing important information from The Green Book: The Black Travelers’ Guide to Jim Crow America. www.history.com/news/the-green-book-the-black-travelers-guide-to-jim-crow-america (5 minutes)
The teacher will read Ruth and the Green Book by Claire Murray. (15 minutes)
While the teacher is reading, the students will record important words in an Answer Garden. answergarden.ch/
The teacher will stop and ask questions during the reading to assess learning.
The teacher can also give time for students to turn and talk about certain things that happen in the story.
After reading the book, the class will discuss the Answer Garden.
Students will be divided into 5 groups.
Each group will get a set of 4 primary source photos.
1- Civil War
2- Reconstruction
3- Jim Crow Laws
4- Civil Rights Movement
Students need to observe the photos and try to put them in order from what happened first, second, third and fourth. (5-10 minutes)
The teacher will walk around monitoring conversations as well as questioning students of why they think their order is correct, etc.
After all groups have their photos in the order that they think is correct, let each group share their order and explain why they believe it is correct.
After every group has shared their order, the teacher will show the class the correct order and discuss why it is the right order. (5-10 minutes)
After the class discussion, each group needs to make a tableau (a frozen, silent picture made with just their bodies. They can be people or objects. Show different levels- high, middle and low. Make it come to life by using facial expressions but no props!) reenacting the photo the teacher assigns them. They also need to write one sentence (for the group to memorize) summarizing the time period their photo represents. (5 minutes)
1 group will make a tableau reenacting the Civil War photo.
1 group will make a tableau reenacting the Reconstruction photo.
1 group will make a tableau reenacting the Jim Crow Laws photo.
1 group will make a tableau reenacting the Civil Rights Movement photo.
1 group will make a tableau reenacting The Green Book: The Black Travelers' Guide to Jim Crow America
Each group will present their tableau to the class. The group will announce their tableau with the era they are representing, freeze for about 10 seconds then will recite their sentence summarizing the time period they are representing.
